H I Absorption toward the Nucleus of the Powerful Radio Galaxy Cygnus A: Evidence for an Atomic Obscuring Torus?
نویسندگان
چکیده
We report the detection of broad (FWHM 270 km s) H I z 21 cm absorption toward the compact (,15 h pc) radio nucleus of the nearby powerful radio galaxy Cygnus A. The absorption corresponds to a column density of hydrogen atoms of at least 2.54H 0.44 3 10 Tspin cm. Observations of OH and H2CO yielded upper limits. While other possibilities exist, we argue that the observed H I absorption plausibly occurs within a circumnuclear obscuring torus which is thought to block our direct view of a quasar nucleus in this object. We have attempted to constrain the properties of the obscuring gas by combining our H I result with upper limits on molecular absorption and estimates of the total obscuring column density from X-ray observations. One possibility is that the majority of the gas is in a hot (28000 K) mainly atomic phase; we derive limits on the size of such an atomic torus. Alternatively, the H I absorption might be caused by atomic gas within a warm (21000 K) mainly molecular torus. In this case, the nondetection of molecular absorption can possibly be explained by radiative excitation due to the central radio source. Follow-up VLBI observations are planned which will further constrain the properties of the absorbing gas and distinguish between the competing models. متن کاملDirect evidence of the receding ‘torus’ around central nuclei of powerful radio sources
The presence of obscuring material (or a dusty ‘torus’) in active galactic nuclei (AGN) is central to the unification model for AGN. Two models, the multi-population model for radio sources and the receding torus model, are capable of describing observational properties of powerful radio galaxies and radio quasars. Here, I study the changes of the opening angle of the obscuring torus with radio...

One of the most important problems in the study of AGN is understanding the detailed geometry, physics, and evolution of the central engines and their environments. The leading models involve an accretion disk and torus around a central black hole. Much of this torus should be comprised of atomic gas, detectable in absorption toward the bright inner radio jets. In the last few years, a number o...
متن کاملThe Ionization Fraction in the Obscuring ‘Torus’ of an Active Galactic Nucleus
The LINER galaxy NGC 2639 contains a water vapor megamaser, suggesting the presence of an edge-on nuclear accretion disk or torus. This galaxy is thus a good candidate for revealing absorption by the torus of any compact nuclear continuum emission. In this paper, we report VLBA radio maps at three frequencies and an ASCA X-ray spectrum obtained to search for free-free and photoelectric absorpti...
متن کاملH I absorption in radio galaxies : effect of orientation or interstellar medium ? ?
A search for H I absorption has been made in 23 radio galaxies selected from a complete sample. The observations were made with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), with the Very Large Array (VLA) and for one galaxy with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT). In five galaxies H I absorption was detected. We investigate how the detection rate is distributed among galaxies with...
